Portuguese Passport for Goans – Marriage Registration in Portugal

on Tuesday, May 19, 2009

The Portuguese Consulate here in Goa advises you to apply for Bilhete de Identidade or BI to register the marriage. The BI takes approx. 3- 4 months to arrive after the application is made at the Portuguese Consulate in Goa. To make a BI application you need to make an appointment that is scheduled only after 6 – 8 weeks. I feel this is waste of time since you can directly register your marriage in Portugal soon after the transcription/registration of the Birth.

To register your marriage in Portugal for Portuguese Passport (Goans) you need to appoint an attorney or a lawyer in Portugal. Or if you have any relations or friends living in the close proximity of the Conservatoria than they can submit your documents for Marriage registration for Portuguese Passport.

The Lawyers charge Euro 100 to register the marriage and they guarantee the marriage registration for Portuguese Passport in 45 days or earlier. The registration fee to be paid to the Conservatoria is Euro 100.

Documents required to register Marriage in Portugal for Portuguese Passport for Goans are:
1. Copy of Assento do Nascimento ( of euro 16.00)
2. Birth Certificate of husband/wife whose birth is not registered in Portugal.
3. Marriage Certificate from Sub – Register.
4. Marriage Certificate from Church.

Excluding document # 1 (Assento do Nascimento) all others have to be notarized, attested by the Collector and than by the Under Sectary (Home Department). All documents should be in Portuguese if they are in other languages they have to be translated in Portuguese and both the copies have to be notarized, attested by the Collector and Under Sectary (Home Dept) before submission. Thank you very much for the information. I'm applying for my B.I. and the Portuguese Consulate in Goa has asked for my Marriage Certificate. I am submitting my Marriage Certificate in Portuguese (Teor), duly notarized and attested. It isn't in very good condition though. Do you feel they will accept this document?

To be on safe side I suggest you to supply the extract of the marriage certificate (English Format)it will cost you an additional 1000 buck but its safe. It is wise to register the marriage in Portugal as it saves time and money.

my father had apparently received his assento de casamento.then in order to apply for my mothers identity they were advised to register my mothers marriage also. In the process my fathers original assento de casamento was submitted at the Portuguese cousulate in Goa. Later we were informed that this registration is cancelled because it is already under process in Portugual and my fathers assento de casamento original copy cannot be returned. we do not have a xerox copy also and due to this misinformation our application process is held up, because for us (the children) to apply we require one of the parents assento de casamento. can you please advise us as to what we need to do to obtain another copy of the assento de casamento and what steps my mother needs to take to apply for her passport. thank you

Please be specific Assento de Nascimento(birth certificate) or Assento de Casamento(Marriage certificate). Both can be obtained by the correct name or process number. E-mail goanewz@gmail.com if you need copies of either.

I think you have made the right decision. I am going to put a post on the procedure to get BI directly from Portugal. Please visit the blog once again on 17th July 2009.

Hi , my father has got his BI after completing required process & now we have submitted all required documents for registering my parents marriage to Consulate in Panjim in June'09 , need to know

1. How long would it take to get Assento do Casamento ?

2. I am born in 1973 , what is the procedure after the above ( Point 1 ) for me to get my BI / Portuguese Passport

Appreciate if you could reply at the earliest

There are known cases where in the documents submited in Goa have taken more than 7 months to complete. Whereas if you submit the papers in Portugal it takes 10 working days.

You have 2 options to submit the papers in Goa or directly in Portugal. If you submit the papers in Goa it takes approx. 1yr for your process to complete whereas if you submit the Process directly in Portugal it takes 2 months.

If you submit the process in Portugal it will cost you an addition fees for your lawyer. Normaly they charge between Euro 350 to Euro 450. These days I am woking on a deal with a lawyer in Portugal who will just submit the documents for you without follow ups and charge you fraction of the actual cost. In this way applicants can get the documents processed much faster as there is a huge time/months delay in shipping the documents from Goa to Portugal.

I am writing with regards to my fathers nationality process. He had applied in Goa in 2006. We have just got a letter from the Conservatoria dos Registos Centrais asking him to get his marriage registered. He went to the consulate in Goa, but they said that for the marriage to be registered, his birth has to be registered first. Could you please tell us how we will come to know if the birth is registered? We have not received any letter so far, except the one asking to register his marriage. Any information will be appreciated. Thank you.

I am following a similar case where in the birth was registered and the letter send/lost. I had written to the Conservatoria and found that the birth was already registered 6 months ago. Send e-mail to goanewz@gmail.com for more information.

Hi I have sent my fathers documents to register birth in Portugal with a lawyer in Portugal itself. He has sent me the receipt which says that the papers are submitted for processing.
Need to know:
1. Do I get another BI informing that birth is already registered?
2. If birth is registered, do I need to take appointment in Portugal consulate in goa OR can I just send marriage documents in Portugal?
3. After marriage is registered, as I work in Mumbai do I need to have ration card in goa (I have ration card in mumbai and passport from goa and birth from goa)
Please reply

Goa said...

Best to wait for the birth to register & than make inquires. The rules at the Portuguese Consulate in Goa change every minute and also the rules are made by the clerks at the. Consulate Ration card is not necessary.

Hi,My birth is registered in Portugal. Now what is the next step. I am married. So is marriage registration required before B.I.
I am doing it directly with my lawyer. Please advice me about the B.I. how long it takes and the marriage registration how long it takes.

Is the Goa consulate gives appointment for B.I. or can I go directly to Portugal.

Goa said...

It is advisable to register your marriage before you apply for your BI. You can apply for your BI at the Portuguese Consulate or you can apply for BI or Citizen Card directly in Portugal.
If you proces the marriage tru me I take 5 days. Please send e-mail to goanewz@gmail.com

I had approached an agent with my father to apply for a Portuguese passport. The application was to be done through my father DOB 28/03/1940 since we had all valid documents in his name from the Portuguese Era. We have his TEOR (Nascimento) from the sub-registrar in Goa, Secondary School Certificate (Secund Grao) in Portuguese and also his mother’s original Portuguese passport. We had submitted COPIES of these documents to the agent.

An appointment with the Portuguese consulate in Goa was taken during this period and all necessary formalities were done.

However my father passed away in 2008 and haven’t had enough time to pursue this case however I’d like to do the same now.

I would appreciate if you could enlighten me on the prospects and probability of getting this application completed considering my father is no more and whether it’s worth pursuing it anyways.

Appreciate a quick response.
Thank you.

hi, i tried writing earlier but i could not get through. My father is the applicant. We were under process for registering his birth. But we could dont have any old documents in his name. Now without any information about his birth registration, his documents of marriage have been returned, asking him to transcribe his marriage.

Is this right? can the process of marriage start without obtaining the ascento de nascimento?

hope you can help.

Anonymous said...

hello, as per your site, i wrote to the CRC and they told me that my birth has been registered. I wanted to know how to get my ascento de nascimento? Do i need to write to them? Or will the consulate in Goa help me? Hope you can help.

If you have your assento number than you can order the assento online on www.portaldocidadao.pt or you can go to the consulate and request for one.

I am married to a portuguese national( original Goan),now I wanted to register our marriage in portugal, but the problem is that my passport is with my married surname and not the surname which is on my Indian birth certificate,I am in Uk at the moment, pls advice as to what I should do, in order to register our marriage

Goa said...

For marriage registraion you need the foll. documents.
1. Birth Certificate of the spouse who is not registered in Portugal
2. Marraige Certificate

In referece to the change of the last name you need to explain how and when the last name was changed. There are many who are under the wrong impression that any name change is a considered as the biggest hurdle towards acqquiring the Portuguse Nationality. I beleive all are humans and if you have a valid and logical explanation the authorities in Portugal understand and process the documents.

My fathers birth has been registered in Portugal. Is there a new rule that says that my mother has also to be registered in Portugal and their marriage registered before I can apply?

or is only one parents birth enough?

Anyone of them has to be Portuguese.
